The 2011 IRC Business Meeting was successfully held on Thursday, 30 June,
at the Melbourne Convention Centre in Melbourne, Australia, during IUGG 2011.
Some members also attended an optional informal dinner Friday, 1 July at the
Woolshed Pub in Docklands where they were greeted by a rousing fireworks display
preceding an Australian Football Game at the adjacent Etihad Stadium.
A special guest at the Woolshed Pub gathering, Adrienne Cahalan, entertained the
group with amazing stories of her record-setting circumnavigation of the globe on a
sailboat and her numerous Sydney-to-Hobart races. The Professional Yachtswoman
also holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Meteorology from the University of
Reading.

Comments from IRC Emeritus President Terry Nakajima, who is also the President of the
Atmospheric, Ocean and Environmental Science Section of the Japan Geoscience Union,
regarding the impact of the earthquake in the East Japan area
We would like to express our deepest sympathy and sorrow concerning the serious damage and
loss by the Northwest Pacific Earthquake. We pay sincere respect to the indomitable spirit of the
people facing the serious damage caused by the earthquake and associated tsunami and who are
working to recover from this situation. As scientists, we want to express our will to make any and
all contributions that we can to ease and mitigate the difficulties that result from the earthquake
and associated tsunami.
The government, ministries, related organizations, and academic communities are now trying to
collect and analyze all the information and scientific data associated with the earthquake and
damage caused by the earthquake, so that the public can take deliberate action based on the
information issued by the government and related organizations to minimize the adverse impacts
on public health and society. At the same time, we believe that government and related organizations
should appropriately share and transmit scientific information to ensure that the best information can
be provided to the public.
There is a great need for scientists to carry out immediate and thorough analyses of accurate
atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental observations and models to provide advice to the
government, ministries, and the public, who rely on the disclosure of observations and data from
the government and related organizations. We urgently solicit the collaboration of all scientists to
work together toward such goals. We wish for timely and efficient cooperation among government,
society, and the academic communities to help people to recover from this unprecedented disaster.
Teruyuki Nakajima, Section President
